What Is The Relationship Between RFID And NFC?

Dec. 09, 2019

The identification technology in the Internet of Things is mainly RFID and NFC wireless technology. The representative of the original identification technology was RFID and then extended to NFC technology as the industry expanded. At present, these two technologies play a huge role in the identification of the Internet of Things. However, what is the relationship between RFID and NFC? Many people don't know what they are using, and the boundaries are blurry. The following RFID Sticker Label Supplier will give you answers.

Let us first understand the two terms of RFID and NFC:

1. RFID: RFlD is radio frequency identification, also known as radio frequency identification. It is a communication technology that can identify specific targets and read and write related data through wireless communication numbers.

2. NFC: NFC is short-range wireless communication technology, which can perform short-range wireless communication between mobile devices, consumer electronics, PCs and smart control tools, such as Hotel NFC Card.

What is the difference between NFC and RFID:

(1) Working frequency

The most common feature of RFID and NFC is that they both use 13.56M, except that NFC has only 13.56M. RFID has many other frequency bands besides 13.56M. The low-frequency band has 125KHz, the high-frequency band has 13.56MHz and the ultra-high-frequency band has 433.92 MHz, 915MHz, and 2.45GHz in the microwave band.

The original intention of NFC was to implement near-field payment. NFC chose 13.56M as the foundation and added a point-to-point communication. Traditional RFID can only interact with one reader and one tag at the same time, while NFC can interact with two readers. Data.

(2) Communication distance

NFC is called near field communication, and the communication distance is really very close, not more than 0.1m.

There are many types of RFID, and the recognizable distance is also different. Like RFID access control cards, the recognition distance is almost the same as NFC. However, for application scenarios such as ETC, a longer recognition distance is required. The long-distance RFID recognition distance can reach tens of meters or even hundreds of meters.

(3) Application scenarios

Whether active or passive, RFID is mainly used to identify objects. RFID technology is widely used in logistics, transportation, and warehousing to track goods.

NFC chips are more integrated, including card readers and tags in one. In addition, the two-way communication capability of NFC has been enhanced. In other words, NFC can be used not only as a tag for identification, but also as a two-way communication method for data exchange. NFC is currently most commonly used in the payment space.

Seeing here, can NFC and RFID still be indistinguishable? In general, NFC technology is developed based on RFID technology, but the application scenarios of the two are still different. Compared with NFC, RFID The application scenarios are more common, such as RFID Hard Tag, and cannot be replaced by NFC. Although NFC technology can be used in many scenarios such as the field of payment and short-range object recognition, NFC technology has not yet become a necessary communication interface for mobile phones.
